Dear Weekend

Dear Weekend,

Thank you for rolling out your Saturday and Sunday in a soft green grass carpet of open time, relatively cool morning temperatures and forgiving afternoon temps, for your breezes through the Sycamore leaves, for your bugs and armadillos and raccoons.  Thank you for letting my friends and I fill you as we wished, whether that was Scrabble, homework, reading, doing crossword puzzles, watching a movie, building a log cabin, climbing a tree, swimming, taking a nap, flying a kite, cooking, sitting on a blanket and looking for Mars, going to bed late or going to bed early.

You're the best,

LOVE

In and around my life this past week, I have been blessed. Blessed with my family and my expanding family and a comfortable sense of life going on just as it should.  I'm watching the younger generation of my family, all three of them, move into a new chapter of their lives. I admire their young bravery, their dreams, their hearts. It's such a joy to watch their lives, each in a different place, each magnificent in their moments, each becoming whole and beautiful.

Yet as I do so, if I close my eyes, I can breathe deep and still smell the buttery powder kiss of their baby hair.

Walk this way

One of many things that grabbed me when I first walked through my new house:  this stairway.

Perfect

This past weekend? The cabin, friends, dogs, a boat ride on the Colorado river, crab meat and spinach omelettes, champagne, swimming, visiting with the best of neighbors, baby pools, nature-watching, sleeping late, and Scrabble.  What more could I possibly ask for?  As it turned out, there was an answer to that question I asked myself, as contented and happy as I was when I asked it.  That answer:  Fireflies. (Seriously, fireflies!  When was the last time you saw a field of fireflies?) Gazing into the darkness, we saw one.  And then another.  And then it was all There's one, there's one, there's one, there's one!  And for a brief moment, I was six years old again, filled with wonder and excitement, chasing fireflies through the music of a hot summer night.

That picture of me driving the boat?  That's my boat-driving face.  I'm happy, oh so happy, in this photo.  The Colorado River was green and the afternoon sun was setting.  With each bend in the river, the boat would slice through cool pockets of air and long shadows stretching from the trees on the river banks.  I know this river like the back of my hand and it was wonderful to be on its waters again.

And then of course the drive home...

Teaser

My little brown dog and a tiny peak of my new dining room.  This photo should tell you two things:  Cheyenne would like her bed moved to the new place and, yes, as a matter of fact I do need to get the broom out of the closet.

Before

So where in the world have I been since closing on my new house?  On a cruise, of course, because why would I do anything in a sensible manner?  After closing on the house, I moved out of storage and then had a birthday and on that day I took off on a seven-day cruise with my youngest niece.  Together we had a wonderful mix of fun, relaxation, discovery, adventure and laughter.  It was the perfect vacation.  And now that I'm back, the moving has begun.  Bit by bit, box by box.
